Reader’s Question:

My seventeen year old daughter was pulled over in Edmond Oklahoma and received a ticket for driving the car without car insurance. The vehicle belongs to her friend. Is this going to affect our auto insurance in Edmond?

Smith

Edmond, OK

Whether this type of citation on your daughter’s driving history will affect your car insurance premium rate is up to the rating system that your insurance company has in place. Usually, driving without insurance is a major offense but since the vehicle your daughter was driving in without insurance was not a vehicle that she would normally have insurance on since it was not owned by her and she did not have insurable interest in the car then your insurance company may consider it to be minor. Your car insurance agent in Edmond OK could tell you about your insurance company’s rating system and if your daughter’s ticket will affect your car insurance rates in any way.

To get more information on Oklahoma insurance law you may contact the OK Insurance Department or Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. The Oklahoma Insurance Department may also be able to inform you more about your insurance provider’s rating system since their car insurance rates must be filed with this state agency.

Reader’s Question:

In Broken Arrow Oklahoma, how long do traffic offense remain on your driving record?

Lester

Broken Arrow, OK

Some accidents, any Oklahoma court violation for a traffic offense, or any out-of-state court offense will be placed on your driving history. Your entire driving record will be kept by the Department and will be forwarded if you apply for a drivers license in a different state.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, Oklahoma law requires an official driving record (Motor Vehicle Report) to report all convictions for the past threes. All violations are treated equally for this purpose. So whether your violation is a speeding ticket or DWI in Broken Arrow it is on your Oklahoma MVR for three years.

Reader’s Question:

My drivers license has been suspended for 2 years due to a DWI in New Jersey. Do I need car insurance even if I do not use it? I live in Midwest City Oklahoma?

Joan

Midwest City, OK

You as a motorist may not need car insurance since you will be unable to operate during your two year license suspension for the DWI. If you own a vehicle though and want to maintain registration on it during the time period your drivers license are suspended, the car will need to have car insurance on it in Midwest City, OK.

If there is another person that is also on the registration on the car or is a co-owner than they may be able to carry the insurance on the car and drive you around while you are unable to operate a vehicle.

So if you are not driving but your want somebody to drive you around in your vehicle, it will need to have auto insurance on it. There are insurance providers that will permit someone else to insure your car, even if that person has not insurable interest in the car.

Reader’s Question:

My vehicle broke-down almost 3 years ago and I didn’t bother to have it repaired it as I didn’t need a vehicle or drive myself. Because of this, I stopped paying for my car insurance, and also didn’t bother to renew my drivers license in Kentucky. I am now living in Broken Arrow Oklahoma. I want to repair my vehicle and drive it, but I don’t know how to go about doing it.

Martin

Broken Arrow, OK

If you have not already obtained an Oklahoma license you have to make sure you do not have any outstanding issues with your previous Kentucky driver’s license so that you can obtain the Oklahoma license without any problems. If you already had an OK driver’s license, you many renew a Class D license that has not expired in excess of 3 years at the Department of Public Safety.

You will need to renew the registration on the cars as well. You can contact the Motor vehicle Division or a tag agency to get more information on what specific penalties you might have for expired tags and on information on how to renew them now.

Regarding the required 10/20/10 liability insurance, it will help if you had filled out an Affidavit of Non Use in lieu of auto insurance liability which could be submitted instead of insurance verification so that a non-use decal would be issued for you to place on your car.

Reader’s Question:

My daughter got involved in an accident. Her monthly payment is due on the first of the month. She no longer has her vehicle as it had to be towed and it could not be driven. I believed it has been totaled but there is no final call. Do I pay her payment or terminate the insurance until she gets a new vehicle or her car is fixed? We live in Edmond OK.

May

Edmond, OK

In this kind of situation, I suggest that you keep the coverage in force until the claim has been settled, but you must also verify this decision with your insurance company in Edmond Oklahoma.

After a claim, usually it is cheaper to wait and replace the coverage on a car than it is to cancel (or allow it to cancel for non-payment) and then start a new auto insurance policy.

Reader’s Question:

Anyone out there who can give information regarding minimum auto insurance requirements in Oklahoma City, OK? I really appreciate it very much if someone from Oklahoma can answer.

Robert

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma OK

Minimum requirements in the state of Oklahoma are 25/50/25. Your auto insurance must provide coverage to the tune of twenty five thousand dollars for medical expenses incurred by an individual driver, fifty thousand dollars for combined medical expenses of all of the occupants of a vehicle and twenty five thousand dollars to provide for repair to public and private property, including the vehicle of the victim.

Liability insurance is required for all Oklahoma vehicles which will cover the cost of medical car and auto repair to the person and vehicle injured in an accident for which the insured was responsible. Medical expenses and repair costs can quickly rise in excess of these amounts and the insured will be held personally liable for the difference that is why it is strongly recommended that a liability policy greater than the minimum be purchased.

Comprehensive and collision insurance is not required unless a vehicle is under lien but is still recommended in Oklahoma City, OK. If you are responsible for an accident and has no collision insurance, you will be held singly responsible for repairs to their vehicle. Collision coverage will provide for repairs up to the Kelley Blue Book value of your car, so if costs exceed this amount the car will be totaled and you will receive the cash value of the car.

Cheap Auto Insurance Tulsa OK

Reader’s Question:

We just moved here in Tulsa, Oklahoma and I’m planning to buy a new car and of course, I have to plan for the auto insurance as well. Is it true that getting a less horsepower car can give me a smaller auto-insurance premium?

Liz

Tulsa, OK

Yes, it’s hard to believe that in some cases in Oklahoma, one of the mechanics behind your insurance premium could be as simple as the engine under your car’s hood. If you own a sports car, you are going to pay much high premiums than somebody who drives a little Honda sedan. This is because statistics have shown you are much more likely to get into an accident and either hurt yourself or someone else. These statistics have resulted to considerably high insurance premiums for sports car owners.

Of course, it doesn’t always depend on your horsepower. Drivers of SUV’s and large trucks are the target of higher prices as well. That’s because when one of these large vehicles gets into an accident it’s much easier to injure someone outside of the vehicle or cause severe damage to some structure. This is one of those things people have to live with when owning larger more powerful vehicles. There are ways to try to lower the cost like finding better quotes online. You may also add safety features like an alarm system.

The only true solution in getting cheap car insurance is to get a smaller car but if you are set on having a larger vehicle, then I would say, go online and get multiple quotes. This would give you an idea of what you are going to pay.

Reader’s Question:

My mother had my vehicle and her vehicle on her car insurance policy in Lawton Oklahoma. She just passed away so my question is how long do I have to change the insurance policy under my name?

George

Lawton, OK

Sorry for the loss of your mother. Since terms of auto insurance policies vary you will need to find out from your mother’s insurance broker or agent in Lawton OK how long you have to change over the car insurance policy and what steps to take to obtain an auto insurance policy for at least your car in your name.

Normally, a car insurance policy terminates upon the death of the policyholder, usually done by the request of the estate.

There are some certain general provisions that are required by state law, but policies can vary. It is essential in your situation to read through the car insurance policy issued to your mother. If you have more inquiries, contact your mother’s insurance agent or carrier for information and clarifications on what the process is now that your mother has passed away.

Reader’s Question:

In Oklahoma, How long does a DUI stay on your driving record?

George

Oklahoma City, OK

The OK Department of Public Safety (DPS) states that some collisions, any Oklahoma court conviction for a moving violation, or any out-of-state court infraction will be placed on your driving record. Your entire driving history will be maintained by the Department and will be transferred if you apply for a license in a different state.

According to the Oklahoma driver’s manual the consequences of arrest and infraction for a DUI will stay on a driver’s record. If you are arrested for driving a motorcycle or motor vehicle under the influence of drugs, the conviction and penalties can affect you for the rest of your life. So it would appear that the DUI permanently stays on your Oklahoma driving record.

You may speak with the OK DPS to verify if there if a DUI is ever expunged from a person’s driving record of if it stays there for the lifetime of the motorist.

Car Insurance Non Owners Oklahoma OK

Reader’s Question:

I am just being released from prison and I do not have a car, but Oklahoma requires me to provide proof of insurance to get my driver’s license back. What is a non owners insurance policy? Can I get it here in Oklahoma City? and how much does is it?

Jude

Oklahoma City, OK

Generally, a non-owners auto insurance policy is one that may be written when an insured needs coverage only for his personal use of a vehicle not owned by him or a family member.

So if you need proof of insurance to obtain your Oklahoma driver’s license reinstated but you do not own a vehicle nor will you be living in a residence where there is an automobile in which you could place car insurance on, then a non-owners policy should be available to you to be purchased.

The vehicle owner’s insurance provider or an individual’s non-owner insurance policy will give the proper security verification form that one should show as proof of insurance in Oklahoma.
